We recently stayed overnight in our own private pirate-themed escape room! Thanks to Romantic Adventure Getaways for hosting us in their Pleasure Island suite! We’ve stayed with them twice before in their Night in Paris and their Wizard Romance suite, and had amazing experiences, so we were so excited for the opportunity to stay with them again!
Romantic Adventure Getaway offers some truly amazing themed mini resort suites in Hillsboro, Ohio, Mount Vernon, Ohio, and Morrison, Illinois. It’s like half resort, half escape room. They offer a wide range of themed options, more about those later. We had the chance to stay at their Hillsboro location, just an hour and a half away from Columbus. Staying at such a unique experience that was so close to us was so refreshing. We didn’t need to book flights or pack for a few-day trip, it was so simple!
This was our third stay with Romantic Adventure Getaways, and they still managed to completely impress us.

First Impression of Romantic Adventure Getaways: Is That a Pirate Ship??
When we first walked into the suite, we were hit with the same aesthetic we’ve come to expect from Romantic Adventure Getaways: romance, excitement, and the start of an adventure.
Then, we walked into the bedroom…
There was a giant pirate ship with a bed inside!
I don’t know what I was expecting for the bed, but it wasn’t that. We were laughing in amazement wrapping our heads around what we were looking at.
Like our other stays, the first clue was right there when you walked in, we just had to follow the white rose petals to the clue. I love that because it gets you started right away without feeling confused. The theming was immersive while still feeling romantic. The jacuzzi setup was similar to the other suites (nice in all three), along with a few couples activities towards the end, but everything else felt new.
Romantic Adventure Getaways Thoughtful Personal Touches
One thing Romantic Adventure Getaways does very well is personalization. Even on our third stay, it still felt thoughtful.
Our names were spelled out in rose petals on the bed again, and they included other personal touches too, like playing our first dance song from our wedding. I love that they add these personal touches that make the whole experience feel even more special.
An Adventurous (and Challenging!) Pirate Experience
If I had to describe Pleasure Island in one sentence, it would be:
An exciting pirate adventure with excellent puzzles and riddles that make you think.
This suite felt like the most adventurous of the three we’ve done so far. The challenges were truly challenging; we really had to work together to solve them. If you do get stuck, there are optional hints available, which is nice, but we love having to work through things together.
And don’t worry, I won’t spoil anything, but there were several moments where either Kevin or I physically jumped when a secret was revealed. Not jump scares, more like “wow I did NOT see that coming” moments.
One of my favorite activities was feeding a donut to a parrot (no further explanation, no spoilers!), and we had so much fun dressing up in pirate gear and taking photos together.
Teamwork Is a Non-Negotiable (In a Good Way!)
Like the other suites, Pleasure Island is definately a teamwork experience, maybe even more so. Several challenges would have been impossible to complete alone. We both had to think, talk to each other, and work together the whole time.
I really love that about these experiences. They bring you closer without forcing it. You’re solving problems, crawling through hidden spaces, discovering new rooms, and figuring things out together.
Later in the night, once we were finally in bed, the immersive setup made it feel like we were on the ocean or at the beach. It was such a relaxing contrast to the rest of the evening.
How 'Pleasure Island' Compares to Our Other Stays with Romantic Adventure Getaways
If you’ve already stayed in one Romantic Adventure Getaways suite and are wondering if another is worth it: yes, as long as you enjoyed the first one.
Each experience is different enough that it didn’t feel recycled. The themes, challenges, surprises, and pacing were all unique. That said, all of the suites do require similar “relationship soft skills” like teamwork and communication. If one suite wasn’t your cup of tea, I probably wouldn’t recommend trying again. But if you loved your first stay, you’ll probably love another.
Tips for staying with Romantic Adventure Getaways
- Get there at check-in! Or as close to check-in as you can. Things are on timers, and this helps the whole process go a bit smoother, plus you’ll be prompted to take a dinner break partway through the adventure. It’s definitely an all evening event, so you’ll want plenty of time to experience it without getting tired!
- If you get stuck on any clues, don’t worry! You can use your phone to scan the QR codes for extra hints!
- Take this as a chance to unplug and be fully immersed in the experience with your partner (unless you get stuck on a hint of course)!
- Pack light! You really won’t need to pack much for this stay. All you’ll really need is some comfy clothes that you can move around in and your toiletries!
What to Know Before You Book Your Romantic Adventure Getaway
- This is an all-evening experience where you stay overnight. You’ll start at check-in, take a break for dinner, and continue well into the night.
- The default experience assumes guests are able-bodied. There is crawling, climbing, and ladders involved. If that might be an issue, let the hosts know so they can modify the experience for you.
This experience is designed for couples. Keeping things PG here, there is a clear romantic undertone throughout. This is probably not something you’d want to bring a platonic friend to!
Final Thoughts: Why We Keep Coming Back to Romantic Adventure Getaways
Even after three stays, I still see so much value in these micro-getaways. They feel like a mental escape without flights, PTO requests, or complicated planning.
If you’re craving a mini vacation but don’t want to travel far, this experience mentally transports you somewhere else. And if you book on a weekend, you don’t even have to work around work schedules! (Well, for many of my readers anyway…)
Pleasure Island was adventurous, romantic, full of surprises, and so much fun. If you’re on the fence, think of it this way: you get a full vacation feeling in one night, without ever leaving Ohio.
